Electrophoretic coating is a pioneering technology where the painted object, serving as the anode in an aqueous solution of paint, interacts with a cathodic counterpart. By applying a direct current between these poles, the paint is uniformly deposited on the surface through intricate physical and chemical interactions induced by the electric current.
The systematic process flow for applying electrophoretic coating on metal surfaces includes: Pre-cleaning → On-line → Oil removal → Washing → Rust removal → Washing → Neutralization → Washing → Phosphating → Washing → Passivation → Electrophoretic coating → Tank cleaning → Ultra-filtration → Drying → Off-line.
Electrophoretic coating encompasses four concurrent processes, each playing a crucial role in achieving a flawless finish.
1. Electrophoresis: Under the force of a DC electric field, positively and negatively charged colloidal particles migrate to the opposite electrodes, a process also known as swimming.
2. Electrolysis: Redox reactions occur at the electrodes, forming oxidation at one and reduction at the other, transforming the paint chemistry at the molecular level.
3. Electrodeposition: Driven by electrophoretic action, colloidal particles reach the anode surface, release electrons, and deposit as an insoluble, precipitated layer, forming a robust paint film.
4. Electroosmosis: In an electric field, the solid phase remains stationary while the liquid phase migrates. This movement expels water from the paint film, resulting in a highly resistant, low-water-content, dense coating.
5. Iron red epoxy electrophoresis paint, for instance, involves an epoxy resin modified with butanol, ethanol amine, talc, and iron oxide. When mixed with distilled water and exposed to a DC electric field, the solution separates into charged ions, undergoing complex physical, chemical, and electrochemical transformations.
Electrophoretic coating boasts rapid construction speed, enabling mechanized and automated continuous operations that diminish labor intensity. It ensures uniform paint films with strong adhesion, even on parts that general methods fail to coat effectively, such as the seams of fascia plates.
The paint utilization rate is impressively high at 90%-95%. Using water as a solvent, electrophoretic paint offers non-combustibility, non-toxicity, and user-friendly handling.
Once dried, the electrophoresis-applied paint film exhibits superior adhesion. Its resistance to rust, corrosion, and weather significantly surpasses that of regular paints and conventional application methods.
