The electrophoretic coating process for general metal surfaces follows this streamlined flow: Pre-cleaning → On-line → Oil removal → Washing → Rust removal → Washing → Neutralization → Washing → Phosphating → Washing → Passivation → Electrophoretic coating → Cleaning on the tank → Ultra-filtration → Drying → Off-line.
Electrophoretic coating comprises four synchronized processes.
1. Electrophoresis: Colloidal particles charged either positively or negatively move towards the opposite pole under a DC electric field, also known as swimming.
2. Electrolysis: Redox reactions occur at the electrodes, resulting in oxidation and reduction phenomena.
3. Electrodeposition: Driven by electrophoresis, charged colloidal particles near the anode release electrons, leading to insoluble state deposition and the formation of a paint film.
4. Electroosmosis: Under an electric field, the liquid phase moves while the solid phase remains stationary. This process gradually expels water from the paint film, resulting in a dense, resistant film with minimal water content.
5. For instance, iron red epoxy electrophoresis paint involves a system of modified epoxy resin, butanol, ethanol amine, talc, and iron red substances. When mixed with distilled water and subjected to a DC electric field, it separates into cations and anions, undergoing complex physical, chemical, and electrochemical changes.
Electrophoretic coating boasts rapid construction speed, enabling mechanized and automatic continuous operations that reduce labor intensity. This method ensures a uniform and smooth paint film, even on parts that are hard to coat with traditional methods, like welding seams on fascia plates.
The paint utilization rate is impressively high at 90%-95%. Since electrophoretic paint uses water as a solvent, it offers non-combustibility, non-toxicity, and ease of operation.
