Electrophoretic coating encompasses four concurrent processes.
1. Electrophoresis: Under the DC electric field, charged colloidal particles migrate towards oppositely charged electrodes, a phenomenon also known as swimming.
2. Electrolysis: Redox reactions occur at the electrodes, forming oxidation and reduction phenomena.
3. Electrodeposition: Charged colloidal particles migrate near the anode, release electrons, and form an insoluble paint film on the surface through deposition and precipitation.
4. Electroosmosis: Under an electric field, the liquid phase moves while the solid phase remains stationary. Electroosmosis gradually expels water from the paint film, creating a dense, high-resistance paint film with minimal water content.
5. For example, iron red epoxy electrophoresis paint involves a system with modified epoxy resin, butanol, ethanol amine, talc, and iron red substances. Mixed with distilled water, this system undergoes a series of complex physical, chemical, colloid chemistry, and electrochemical changes under a DC electric field, resulting in positively charged cations and negatively charged anions.
