Electrophoretic coating represents a pinnacle in coating technology. This method involves immersing the target object in a water-soluble paint bath, where it acts as the anode (anodic electrophoresis). A corresponding cathode is established, and a direct current flows between these two electrodes. The typical process flow for electrophoretic coating on metal surfaces is meticulously structured as follows: Pre-cleaning → On-line → Oil removal → Washing → Rust removal → Washing → Neutralization → Washing → Phosphating → Washing → Passivation → Electrophoretic coating → Cleaning in the tank → Ultra-filtration → Drying → Off-line.
Electrophoretic coating encompasses four concurrent processes that work in harmony to achieve a superior finish.

1. Electrophoresis: Here, under the influence of a DC electric field, positively and negatively charged colloidal particles migrate towards their respective opposite poles, a phenomenon also referred to as swimming.
2. Electrolysis: This involves redox reactions occurring separately at each electrode, leading to oxidation and reduction phenomena on the respective electrodes.
3. Electrodeposition: Due to electrophoresis, charged colloidal particles move towards the anode near the template surface, release electrons, and deposit in an insoluble state. This results in the formation of a paint film through a precipitation phenomenon.
4. Electroosmosis: While the solid phase remains stationary under the electric field, the liquid phase moves. Electroosmosis expels water from the paint film to its exterior, eventually forming a dense paint film with minimal water content and high resistance, impervious even to electric currents.
5. Taking iron red epoxy electrophoresis paint as an example: The system involves modified epoxy resin, butanol, ethanolamine, talc, and iron red substances. When mixed with distilled water and subjected to a DC electric field, this mixture separates into positively charged cations and negatively charged anions, undergoing a series of complex physical, chemical, and electrochemical changes.
Electrophoretic coating boasts rapid application speeds and supports mechanized, automated, and continuous operations. This minimizes labor intensity and ensures a uniform, strong, and smooth paint film, even on parts that are typically difficult to coat, like the welding seams of fascia plates.
